AZZOLE

This is not an easy concept to define; you'd probably have to spend some time with us to really get a handle on it - if you really want to find out all about AZZOLEs, you might consider joining us as a Rookie. We're basically good people who like to have fun, most often in folk music-related activities. Kind of like assholes, only much nicer.

AZZOLE Country

Anyplace where AZZOLEs gather for any period of time (generally greater than a few hours). Typically refers to a campsite at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, where it is an institution almost as old as the Festival itself, or at any of several other festivals.

AZZOLE-of-the-Year

An award given anually at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, usually on Sunday afternoon or evening. Presented to the AZZOLE who represents the best of who and what the AZZOLEs are. The actions and attitudes for which the recipient is recognized typically occur during the Festival itself, but may include deeds perpetrated during the pre-Fest period.

AZZOlympics

A competition held annually at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, on Saturday night. Events include Blow Pong, Human Bowling, and Quarter-Horse Racing.

Blow Pong

Two teams, one on each side of a table; the object is to force a ping-pong ball off the table on the opposing team's side while preventing it from being forced off your side of the table - without touching the ball.

Human Bowling

This is what it sounds like - bowling, with people being used for the ball and the pins.

Quarter-Horse Racing

A relay race, involving quarters and glasses of beer, wine, etc. - must be seen to be appreciated.

Rookie

A first-year AZZOLE. Indispensible to the smooth running of AZZOLE Country. Being a Rookie is really the only way to truly discover who and what the AZZOLEs actually are (it's also a great introduction to the Festival).

Rookie-of-the-Year

Similar to the AZZOLE-of-the-Year award, this is presented to the Rookie who best carried out the duties and responsibilities of his or her position. The award is presented each year at Festival on Sunday afternoon or evening, immediately before the AZZOLE-of-the-Year award winner is chosen.
